Drums have now become one of the staple musical instruments for music bands. We can easily purchase a drums set at a local musical instruments store, both in packages or separately. Even though it is a percussion musical instrument, the drums set still remains one of the main instruments in modern music. As it is large in size with many detachable parts, drums sets easily become the largest instruments in a band, making it difficult for musicians to clean drums set.
Nevertheless, maintaining your drums set are a staple thing to do to keep its quality. The following are several things to do to clean and maintain your drums set:
-
Start to clean drums set by detaching the parts
Cleaning a drums set while it is readily stationed will make the process harder. Detach the drums gently and unscrew all of the installed bolts. Do not forget to take note of the bolt fastness position before detaching them. On reinstalling the bolts, we can directly fasten the bolts back to their original condition so that the sound do not differ.
-
Check the batter and resonator drum heads
Drum heads are the thin layer of sheets where we strike at to produce the sound; there are two of them for each drum namely the batter and the resonator. As with strings on a guitar, they function as the sound source and amplifier on drums. They can accumulate dust and dirt if they do not get routine cleaning, so you have to check on them regularly and replace them when they have seen a long time of wear and tear, particularly if the sound changes, or dents start to appear on the surfaces.
-
Continue to clean drums set to the drum hoop edges
The bearing edges are the part where the drum head sits installed. You can check on this part after detaching the heads. Check on it by touching it with your finger, feeling for any dents or bumps, as those two can alter the drum’s sound. After that, rub the edges with a wet cloth.
-
Next is to the drum body
Body of a drum is one of the most exposed part of the drum. Thus it is advised to clean them every time after it is done being played. Do not use unsuitable cleaner agent as it can alter the drum’s color. You can clean just using warm water and dishes cleaner agent to be safe.
-
Lastly, the cymbals
Cymbals are the accompanying musical instruments for drums, made from thin round sheets of metal. Use a special cleaner agent to clean your cymbals to prevent rust and discoloration. Alternatively, you can use water and cloth to polish them.
Those are the steps to clean your drums set which you can follow to maintain your drums set and keep its sound quality.
